Community Skills Bank

How the Community Skills Bank works

The Community Skills Bank is an initiative of the George Town Council. The aim is to maximise the use of those skills that exist within our community by identifying those skills and collating them into a central registrar that can be accessed when opportunities arise.

If we become aware of particular opportunities of needs, we will access the Community Skills Bank to see if we have anyone within the Community with relevant skills and experience. We will then contact those people who may be a match and provide them with the details. It may be a casual employment opportunity, an opportunity to volunteer your skills, or an opportunity to become involved in a community project.

Not an Employment Agency

The Community Skills Bank is not an employment agency. There are other organisations better equipped to provide that service. However, the Community Skills Bank will help to ensure that opportunities for our community are not lost because we simply didn't know we had the existing skills to match those opportunities that do arise. Nor are we employment brokers. If we put you in touch with a potential employer it's up to you to secure the job.

Different Opportunities

Although the Community Skills Bank is not an employment agency, sometimes the Council becomes aware of someone seeking the specialist skills required for a temporary job, or seeking volunteers, or wishing to progress a Community Project. Sometimes we are looking for those skills ourselves, perhaps for a community project.

We Won't Give Your Personal Information to Others

The Community Skills Bank is much like any other bank. Only you can make withdrawls. We won't give others your details. If someone approaches the Council seeking someone with specific skills and the details you have supplied are a good match, we will get their details and pass them on to you. Only you can make deposits into your account, updating or adding information about your skills and experience at any time. We will also contact you at least once annually to check the accuracy of your details and to check that you wish to remain a member. You may withdraw from the Community Skills Bank at any time.

How We Contact You

By completing and signing the registration form (pdf format) you agree to allow Council staff to contact you either by telephone or in writing to advise of any opportunities that may arise. However you are in no way obligated to accept such opportunities. Furthermore, you may request that your details be removed from the Community Skills Bank. You may also request access to your personal details in order to check accuracy. The Council will contact you at least once annually to confirm your details and your permission for us to retain this information. No information that identifies you personally will be disclosed to an external party.

There are no guarantees

While it would be nice to make use of all the skills within our community, we don't know what opportunities may arise and cannot guarantee that you will be contacted with information and opportunities relevant to your particular skills. Furthermore, if more than one member of the bank has a match with the skills sought, we may contact each member. We provide no guarantee that you will have exclusive access to details of the particular opportunity.

No obligations

We may contact you from time-to-time to let you know about an opportunity where you may be able to use your skills. However, you are under absolutely no obligation to act. You can choose to reject any offer of employment, or other opportunity.

It's voluntary

The Community Skills Bank is completely voluntary. Join if you wish to. Only include those skills or experience that you wish to. Withdraw any or all of your information at any time that you wish to.

No cost

At present there is no fee to become a Community Skills Bank member.
